Sony WEGA TV | Sony SLV-N80 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR

Sony WEGA TV | Sony SLV-N80 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR

Sony WEGA TV - Sony SLV-N80 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR

The Sony SLV-N80 4-head VCR is equipped to not only record and play VHS tapes, but also deliver enhanced video resolution due to its Reality Regenerator. The enhanced video exceeds most VHS recordings, and comes close to the quality of digital broadcasting regardless of the recording source. Sony added such additional features as digital tracking, which adjusts the tracking automatically to smooth playback; commercial skip, which advances the tape 30 seconds when selected; and hi-fi stereo recording and MTS stereo playback. People who currently own Sony Wega TVs or other Wega components will appreciate the VCR’s silver chassis, which is designed to complement the Wega line.

The VCR records in both SP and EP mode, while playing back in SP, EP, and LP modes. The slower EP mode is nearly as sharp as the SP mode due to the VCR’s 19-micron heads, which reduce distortion and deliver a clear, digital-like picture. The SLV-N80 also employs plug-and-play setup, which automatically tunes the channels and sets the clock so users can enjoy the device straight out of the box. Other features include an eight-event timer, auto head cleaning, a multilingual onscreen display, a parental lock feature, and front composite inputs for connecting to a camcorder or game system. Other inputs and outputs include coaxial connectors, an additional set of composite inputs, and a set of composite outputs. In addition, the SLV-N80 is Energy Star compliant.

Sony WEGA TV | End Of The Line For A Sony WEGA SD TV In HD

Question of Melvin : I have a Sony KDS60A-20-20 TV green tint has taken over the picture screen?

Answer by Dennis C
Hi Melvin, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Since your Sony WEGA is a “rear projection” style tabletop TV, there are better Y!A Categories than “Camcorders” to place your post (“Home Theater” or “TVs” would have been more appropriate).

But since I know about these types of sets, I can tell you that the metal-halide lamp is probably going out. These are mercury-vapor based arc lamps (also called HID lamps, for High Intensity Discharge), and as they age the output darkens and the color may shift towards that green cast you are seeing. Yours is a 2006-2007 model, so it’s an appropriate amount of time for the lamp life (6000-8000 hours or 5 years, average use).

A genuine Sony Parts lamp (XL-5200) can cost around $ 300 from a Sony repair tech, but you can get a suitable replacement for just-under $ 100 USD. Philips, Osram, or Ushio probably makes the actual “Sony” bulb, and these are the 3 main brands of replacements you’ll find. You might find some East Coast/West Coast suppliers who specialize in cheaper China import bulbs, and some offer their own extended warranty options.

Save the old “lamp assembly” (black plastic & metal sled holding the actual bulb & reflector), as these can be rebuilt using just a new lamp element, and some lamp dealers offer swap-out deals. Typically, you get a whole “new” assembly (lamp + sled) when you buy a replacement TV lamp.

I’d recommend changing the lamp ASAP, since some HID lamps at the end of their life can overheat, melt the connecting wires, or even explode (mostly spreading quartz glass shards and mercury vapor residue inside your TV). Usually sensors inside your TV will warn of an aging lamp, and even shut down the set before temperature or running-current exceeds safe limits. Well-made lamp sleds have an added quartz shield to contain any broken glass or residue.

If you wish to save a service call fee, there are many D-I-Y how-to’s for your model on YouTube or other TV Repair websites. Just be sure to correctly type-in your WEGA model # (KDS-60A2020 not “-20-20″) when shopping for parts & info.

I added Sony’s PDF Operating Instructions link (with lamp changing info on page 51) in my Sources below.

hope this helps,

–Dennis C.
